Alexandra sponsorship helps recognise the work of nurses on the Covid frontline

The Cavell Star Awards, which Alexandra has proudly sponsored for three years, has been celebrating the amazing work of NHS nursing professionals going above and beyond during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The awards, which are run by the Cavell Nurses’ Trust, recognise nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants who provide exceptional care to their colleagues, to patients and their families.

Some of the worthy award winners recognised with a Star Award include:

Jenny Bircher

Healthcare assistant Jenny Bircher from Gloucestershire Royal Hospital went the extra mile to look after new members of the team going through rapid inductions to cope with the demands of Covid-19 to win her Cavell Star Award.

Admiral Nurse and colleague, Asma Pandor, said: “Jenny is a phenomenal healthcare assistant with a very caring nature. She is very experienced and always willing to share her knowledge and experience with others especially new starters.

“She will go out of her way to make everyone feel welcome on the ward and part of the family.”

Nesta Featherstone

Matron for Infection Prevention & Control at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, Nesta Featherstone, was given an award for continuing her exceptional work ethic as hospitals face unprecedented circumstances in spite of personal loss.

Helen Howard, Deputy Chief Nurse at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust said: "Nesta is a compassionate, strong leader who is passionate about getting it right for the patients in our care.

“Never has infection prevention been more important with a global pandemic and the challenge that has been presented has meant that the IP agenda has been put at the heart of the discussions.”

The T11 Team

The T11 South Paediatric nurses’ team at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust were given award recognition after their ward suddenly changed from paediatric to adult Covid almost overnight.

One of the team members, Staff Nurse Firdowsa Afdal, said: “The team stuck together, stayed positive and continued their great work. All the doctors were so amazed by our team. They even wrote an article on the amazing care paediatric nurses and play specialists gave to adults with dementia by treating them like individuals.”
